VISITING HDF MERCY CENTRE

1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

5: Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Reflection: As an active member of a club named serwis, I visited the HDF mercy centre for the second time. It is always great meeting those kids, those kids are filled with love and really know how to spread that love. Although we could only spend a couple pf hours with them, those also meant a lot to them and us. We danced with them, coloured with them, and made sure they had a great time. Visiting them always makes me so happy, but at the same time makes me realize that I have so many things to be grateful for, which maybe others might not have. With a busy and ongoing life, sometimes we forget to appreciate the little things, and visiting this place makes me feel like I came back home and its time to spend some great time and appreciate the little things in my life that truly make me happy, and at the same time to do things that might bring a smile to someone else's face.

Reflection: As part of a trip, I took part in a trash cleanup. I helped in cleaning of the streets of a slum area. We spent a couple of hours cleaning the streets with trash bags and sticks in our hands. The most exciting part was separating the trash and weighing it. We got the most surprising weight of the trash in such a small cleanup. This brought in some realisation and made me think about the world as a huge representation of those streets, if those streets can have an unbelievable amount of trash, it is hard to imagine how much trash is building upon the world. This event really made me change some of my habits, I now make sure I minimize my usage of plastic in ways such as not buying drinks from places that give plastic cups and for example taking my own bottle to starbucks for my drink. These small changes have changed the way I see the world and make me feel like, although a little contribution, I am helping the world by reducing plastic usage of one person.

Reflection: I worked over there for quite a while as a helper and my role as a helper was to spend some time with the elders there and make them feel like I am someone they have lost as a family member. Most of the elders there lost someone very close to their heart, and I was given the job to make them feel like they found that family member in me. I played games with them, talked to them, ate food with them, and helped them out in their problems. Most of the time, I would just listen to them talk, which is something they wouldn't usually get to do, since no one would listen to them spill their lives and problems out to someone.
The purpose for taking a part in this work experience was to understand and step inside the shoes of people that I have never really thought about. It was possibly something I did to see my future and give them something I would want as an elder in the future.  Making them feel found and loved was incredible because I achieved my goal of creating a strong bond between them and me, which made me feel accomplished and also gave me the experience of working with elders, which is something that will be quite helpful in terms of the path I want to pursue in the future, which is being a doctor. Working with one kind of people made me realize that there are so many different kinds of people and I was so privileged to work with them and give them the love so many people want, but don't receive.

Reflection: As a part of an event, I visited the cheerful life foundation for young kids. Initially, we made games for them such as memory game and alphabet games, then, we went to the foundation and played all these games with them. We spent some time with them and ate some food with them and came back. Although this was a short trip, it made my day. Looking at the kids and their intelligence with all the educational games brought up so much insight in my mind about the SDG of quality education. It made me realize how much potential we actually have in the world and in the future generation. All these kids needed was a little push and when they got that, they had all the chances they could get to portray their knowledge and smartness to the world. Quality education is a very important goal that our work is building towards and the initiation of it shows how much potential our world has.
